The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised the 2.8 million people who registered for the presidential elections.

The Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the UN, Farhan Haq, noted that presidential elections must take place under favorable conditions for the political transition in Libya to be completed and for democratically elected institutions to take office.

Farhan Haq also stated that they were informed of the announcement made by the High National Election Commission (HNEC) on December 22 that the House of Representatives (HoR) should set a new date for the elections and that they made some suggestions to the General Secretary.

In addition to this, Hak stated that as the General Secretary, they support the HNEC’s commitment to the ongoing presidential and parliamentary election process in Libya.

Stating that the UN’s Special Advisor to Libya Stephanie Williams and UNSMIL will continue their work, Hak emphasized that they will make the necessary efforts to complete the election process quickly.
