Qatar is interested in Eastern Mediterranean oil exploration, says Lebanon

Qatar wants to join French and Italian firms in exploring for oil in Lebanese waters, says the minister.

On Friday, the Lebanese energy minister said that Qatar is interested in collaborating with TotalEnergies and Eni to explore oil in two regions of the Lebanese seas.

Walid Fayad said during a meeting with Prime Minister Najib Mikati that Qatar wants to join the partnership exploring for oil in blocks 4 and 9 in the Eastern Mediterranean.

According to Fayad, Qatari Oil Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi sent a letter expressing interest on behalf of Doha.

The Lebanese Minister stated that Qatar’s engagement in oil and gas development in Lebanon is essential, given its potential.

This week, Lebanon and Israel reached a historic agreement to demarcate their disputed maritime boundary, putting an end to years of impasse and clearing the way  for offshore oil development
