Kuwait’s Crown Prince has been given temporary authority to carry out some of Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah’s constitutional obligations, according to official news agencies citing an Emiri decree.

The Emir’s half-brother, Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, is in his eighties. The Crown Prince of Kuwait becomes Emir automatically when he dies, according to Kuwait’s constitution.

Sheikh Nawaf has been Emir for just over a year after his brother, who had reigned for more than a decade, died in September 2020.

Sheikh Nawaf appeared weak on his final public appearance in October, when he gave a brief address to parliament. Kuwait said in July that the Emir had completed successful medical examinations and that they would continue.
