The news on McKenzie’s visit comes two days after Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi criticized the US’ intent to conduct talks with Iran, with regards to a nuclear deal.

McKenzie’s one-day visit will include talks on Iran and other regional issues, and it is the first high-level visit from the US since the inauguration of Joe Biden. The visit is also the first organised to Israel under CENTCOM’s umbrella. Israel, which was previously under the jurisdiction of the European Command of the US military, was moved to CENTCOM’s jurisdiction by the Pentagon two weeks ago, on 15 January.

The move is seen by some Israeli government officials as an important move, which will enhance the country’s strategic importance, and contribute towards relations with the US military.
