By the end of the week, Lebanon anticipates receiving a formal proposal from US mediator Amos Hochstein about establishing a maritime boundary with Israel, according to a tweet from the president of Lebanon on Monday.

The presidency further stated that Elias Bou Saab, the deputy speaker of parliament for Lebanon, met with Hochstein last week while on a trip to New York and informed President Michel Aoun of the conclusion.

To reach an agreement over the maritime boundary that would let both countries search for offshore energy resources, Hochstein has been traveling back and forth between Israel and Lebanon, two adversarial nations with a long history of hostilities.

An agreement would eliminate one possible point of contention between Israel and the heavily armed, Iran-supported Lebanese organization Hezbollah, which has cautioned against any Israeli exploration and extraction in the contested seas.
