Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s Emir, has allegedly issued a decree which has suspended parliamentary sessions for one month, according to statements from Kuwaiti state media. A delay in the formation of a new government is the reason for the adoption and issue of the order issued by the Emir, on Thursday.
The decree made by Emir Nawaf came into force on 18 February and is connected to Article 106 of the country’s constitution. According to Article 106, the Emir was given the power to prolong the sessions of the country’s national assembly for a period which cannot exceed one month.
Although the most recent formation of the Kuwaiti cabinet was approved following the country’s legislative elections in December 2020, it was dissolved one month later due to internal disputes over ministerial nominations on 12 January. Afterwards, the government and ministers’ resignations were approved by the Emir in order to work as a caretaker until the formation of a new cabinet.
One week later, Emir Nawaf reappointed Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah as the country’s Prime Minister-designate with the objective to form a new cabinet.
