The UN Development Program in Libya (UNDP) announced that it will transfer $88 million in funds for the December 24 elections, as part of the Promoting Elections for the People of Libya (PEOPLE) project.
UNDP Resident Representative Marc-Andre Franche announced that, as a result of the agreement they signed with the Head of the Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC) Chairman Emad al-Sayeh, they will contribute $88 million to the existing fund for the purchase of materials for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections and other expenses.
In addition, the PEOPLE project also provides technical and infrastructure support to the HNEC in its preparations for the elections. The project is implemented by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
Following the agreement, Franche expressed the UNDP and UNSMIL support for the Libyan elections and HNEC’s efforts. In addition to this, Franche stated that the elections should take place in a fair and free environment.
Previously, Emad al-Sayeh, stated that the second round of the presidential elections will be held on the same date (23 January) as the parliamentary elections.
