On 5 January, UN-sponsored talks conducted within the past week have concluded and led to the establishment of an interim government in Libya. Following a ballot initiated on Friday morning, Mohammed al-Menfi, a Benghazi-based diplomat, and Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, from Misrata, were elected as the head of the Presidency Council and Prime Minister, respectively.
The interim elections are regarded as the first step to reaching a resolution for the civil war in Libya, which has engulfed the country into chaos. The interim government elected will lead the Libyan state to a general election, which will take place on 24 December of this year.
