The EU stated on Tuesday that it supports Syrians’ rights to return to their country, but it also admitted that the necessary circumstances had not been provided.

The EU mission in Syria stated on Twitter that “what is necessary first is to establish circumstances for safe, voluntary, and dignified return of refugees and the internally displaced, in line with international law and the principle of non-refoulment.”

The mission reported that UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi met with Dan Stoenescu, the leader of the EU delegation to Syria, in Damascus.

The EU, it continued, “would assist UN-facilitated returns in a timely way, where and as soon as circumstances permit.

Since early 2011, Syria has been embroiled in a brutal civil war.
