In a written statement made by the Presidency of Tunisia, information was given about the National Committee for the New Republic announced by President Kais Saied on May 2.

It was stated that the committee will consist of two sub-committees, one of which will work on constitutional and political reforms and the other on economic and social reforms.

In the statement, it was expressed that the Committee will create reform proposals on many issues in the light of the results of the electronic consultation held between January 1 and March 20, and these proposals will be advisory.

The extraordinary decisions announced by Tunisian President Saied last year led to a kind of “exceptional situation” in the country.

Saied, who froze the work of the parliament on July 25, 2021, and lifted the parliamentary immunity, expanded his powers with new decrees on September 22, 2021, completely subordinating the executive branch to himself.

With the “road map of exit from the political crisis” announced on December 13, 2021, Saied stated that a constitutional amendment referendum will be held on July 25, 2022, and an early general election will be held on December 17, 2022.
