Yemen’s Houthi rebels have launched a barrage of drone and missile assaults on Saudi Arabia, targeting a liquefied natural gas (LNG) factory, a water desalination plant, an oil facility, and a power station, according to Saudi state-run media.
According to the Saudi-led military coalition operating in Yemen, the early Sunday assaults did not result in any injuries, but they did damage civilian cars and residences in the region.
As peace talks stagnate, the salvo represented the latest escalation in Houthi cross-border strikes on Saudi Arabia. Yemen is experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe as a result of the conflict.
Yahia Sarea, a spokesperson for Iran-backed Houthi rebels, said the group had launched “a wide and large military operation into the depth of Saudi Arabia.”
The military alliance claimed it stopped an attempt on a Saudi Arabian Oil Co., or Aramco, LNG plant at a petrochemicals complex in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu. It was unclear whether the strike had caused any harm to the plant.
A power station in the country’s southwest, a desalination facility on the Red Sea coast of Al-Shaqeeq, an Aramco port in the southern border town of Jizan, and a petrol station in the southern city of Khamis Mushait were among the targets, according to the alliance.
The event occurred after the Gulf Cooperation Council, based in Saudi Arabia, summoned Yemen’s warring parties to negotiations in Riyadh aimed at ending the almost eight-year conflict.
