UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Saturday that he welcomed the official opening of the coastal road as of July 30. Guterres expressed that the opening of the coastal road is a long-awaited development by the Libyan people.

Stating that he appreciated the efforts of the 5+5 Joint Military Committee, the Secretary-General also thanked the Presidential Council and the Government of National Unity (GNU) for their support.

Guterres also stated that the October 2020 ceasefire agreement and the roadmap determined by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) should be adhered to and that he invited all stakeholders in the country to take responsibility for the holding of the general elections set to be held on December 24, 2021.

In addition, the opening of the Sirte-Misrata coastal road was also welcomed by the UN Libya Support Mission (UNSMIL). In its statement, it was emphasized that the official opening of the coastal road will benefit the peace and stability environment in the country and will be effective in strengthening security.

UNSMIL also demanded the rapid deployment of UN ceasefire observers to various regions in Libya, as a requirement of the Joint Military Committee’s ceasefire agreement.
