Major General Aroldo Lazaro Saenz of Spain has been named by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as the interim force commander in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

A statement from Farhan Haq read that Saenz will replace “Major General Stefano Del Col of Italy, who will shortly complete his term.”

“He has had an extensive and illustrious career in the Spanish Army, currently working as an advisor to the Ministry of Defense,” Guterres said of Saenz.

When Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 1978, UNIFIL, a multinational force linked with the United Nations, was founded. To help the Lebanese government, reestablish its authority, the peacekeeping force will provide security peacekeeping in the vicinity of the occupied Palestinian territories.

After Israel’s 2006 summer war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, UNIFIL’s presence was bolstered.
