Jan Kubis, the UN Special Envoy for Libya who held bilateral meetings with Head of the Presidential Council Mohamed al-Menfi on Monday, stated that he will meet with the Libyan parties in order to establish the country’s constitutional basis.

In the announcement made by the media office of the Presidential Council, it was reported that Kubis praised the Presidency Council for its role in unifying the institutions within the country and for its efforts in the national reconciliation process.

Kubis referred to the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) talks and underlined that they were willing to reach a constitutional basis and that a meeting would be organized again very soon.

In his speech addressed to the forum members at the latest meetings, Kubis highlighted that the focus of the LPDF was to vote the constitutional ground for the elections on December 24 to be held in a free, fair and transparent environment, and that a meeting which would result in failure again would not be tolerated.

A consensus could not be reached within the 75-member LPDF, which met in Geneva between June 28 and July 2, 2021. Thus, the date of July 1, previously determined by the Libyan High Election Committee (HNEC), passed without any results.
