Despite Iranian opposition, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait plan to develop a disputed gas field while asking Tehran to commence dialogue.

An agreement to develop the Arash/Dorra maritime gas field, dubbed “illegal” by Iran, would be honored, the Saudi foreign ministry said in a statement.

Oil-rich countries “assert their right to exploit natural resources in this area and that they will continue to implement what was agreed upon,” Saudi Arabia and Kuwait expressed.

As a result, the two countries extended a new invitation for Iran to resolve the decades-old boundary dispute over the gas field’s boundaries.

Kuwait and Saudi Arabia’s joint statement indicated that they were inviting Iran back to the table for further talks as a single negotiating party.

In late March, Tehran claimed that the agreement violated “previously established agreements,” and that it “reserves its right to exploit” the field.
