Ahead of a parliament session on Tuesday, the Iraqi government ordered the shutdown of several major roadways and bridges in the nation’s capital Baghdad.

Before the meeting, followers of Muqtada al-Sadr took to the streets, so security personnel used tanks to block traffic on all bridges and highways leading to the Green Zone.

Wednesday’s session of Parliament will be used to assess Mohammed al-Halbousi’s resignation as Speaker of the Assembly and choose the first deputy speaker. On Monday, Al-Halbousi submitted his resignation amid an ongoing political crisis in Iraq.

The session on Wednesday will be a vote of confidence in the speaker of the house, he continued.

Since the country’s previous elections on October 10, 2021, Shia groups have been unable to come to an agreement on a new prime minister, leaving Iraq in a serious political crisis.
