Turkey’s Communications Directorate announced that the Turkish President and the Emir of Qatar discussed regional issues and steps to improve bilateral relations on Saturday, as the Gulf country celebrated its national day.

According to a statement by the directorate, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan conveyed his greetings to the Qatari people on the occasion of Qatar’s National Day during a phone call with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad.

The December 18 holiday commemorates Qatar’s unity in 1878 under the leadership of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, the country’s founder. Since 2007, it has been celebrated every year.

The ceremony was organized under the phrase “Ancestral meadows; a matter of trust,” a term aimed to draw attention to the worldwide environmental issue as Qatar goes forward with its National Vision 2030 to combat climate change.
