According to the Palestinian health ministry, an Israeli soldier opened fire at a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Jericho, striking a Palestinian in the head.

According to the Ministry of Defense, 20-year-old Ahmed Ibrahim Oweidat was killed by “live gunshots to the head” just before dawn this morning in the Aqabat Jaber camp, where he was staying.

International media outlets indicated that an Israeli army spokesperson stated the event is currently being investigated by the Israeli military.

Israeli soldiers have murdered at least 25 Palestinians in recent weeks. Many were involved in attacks or conflicts, but an unarmed woman and a lawyer who appeared to be a bystander were also killed.

Jenin is often regarded as a stronghold of Palestinian insurgents. Israeli forces are frequently targeted while operating in the area. Even the Palestinian Authority, which administers portions of the occupied West Bank and coordinates security matters with Israel, appears to exercise little authority.

Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967, along with the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem. The Palestinians are vying for those lands in order to establish a future independent state.
