On Sunday, a military operation was launched in the Iraqi capital Baghdad by the Hashd al-Shaabi militia to hunt down Daesh/ISIS militants.

The pro-government Shia militia said its fighters searched several areas in the town of Tarmiyah in Baghdad, a statement read.

Without giving any further details, the militia said the operation aims to arrest militants holed up in rural areas outside cities.

The town of Tarmiyah, from where Daesh/ISIS terrorists launch attacks inside the Iraqi capital, possesses an active presence of the group.

In 2017, by reclaiming all territories Daesh/ISIS controlled since the summer of 2014, which was estimated to be about a third of the country’s territory, Iraq declared victory over the terrorist group.

However, the group still is reported to have maintained sleeper cells in large areas in Iraq and occasionally launches sporadic attacks.
