Iraq’s Basra governorate was hit with a bomb-laden motorcycle on Tuesday which resulted in the killing of at least four civilians. The bomb attack injured four others and caused significant material damage to nearby vehicles.

The explosion took place near the al-Jumhuri General Hospital located in the heart of the city.

The governor of Basra, Asaad al-Idani, confirmed to reporters that a motorcycle equipped with explosives went off and sent a “column of black smoke” into the sky.

While no group claimed responsibility for the attack, explosives experts are continuing their investigation on site.

Basra has not seen deadly attacks for the past several years. Although terrorist organizations like ISIS have increased their activities in the northern and central governorates of Iraq such as Kirkuk and Diyala over the past few weeks. Basra is the southernmost governorate of the country.

Authorities say more details about the attack would be available soon.
