The Lebanese Ministry of Energy and Water issued a statement describing Israeli media allegations suggesting Israel will provide gas to Lebanon through Jordan via the offshore Leviathan field as “absolutely and utterly false.”

“The gas supply deal being negotiated between the Lebanese government and the Egyptian government makes it quite obvious and unambiguous that the gas must come from Egypt,” the ministry said.

According to the ministry, the agreement to sell Egyptian gas to Lebanon is part of a US-led endeavor to assist ease the country’s chronic electrical shortages.

Lebanon is experiencing a serious scarcity of energy owing to a lack of fuel for power production, as well as a rapid increase in derivatives costs due to the fall of the local currency and a lack of foreign money for imports.
