Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Iraqi Prime Minister, announced on Monday that the gang responsible for the killing of activists and journalists in the southern province of the country were arrested by Iraqi security forces. In a tweet sent by the Prime Minister, it was stated that the gang which terrorized the Basra people were caught by security forces. A statement made by security sources said that 4 of the 16 gang members were captured.
Some sources indicate that the same gang was involved in the killing of activists in the antı-government protests seen in October 2019. In total, 565 people were killed in the October protests, which demanded improvements in job opportunities, public services and an end to corruption.
