On Saturday, the Jordanian military announced that it thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs and weapons into the country from adjoining Syria. During the attempt, one smuggler was killed, and several were wounded.

The military said in a statement that it detained a “large quantity” of narcotics as well as ammunition and a communications device, and that the smugglers fled back to Syria as the attempt failed. It said the incident occurred at dawn in eastern Jordan and gave no further details on the matter.

On Wednesday, a news agency had also reported that the Jordanian authorities thwarted an attempt to smuggle half a million pills from Syria into Jordan.

Jordan hosts more than 650,000 Syrian refugees and has been combatting smuggling attempts on a regular basis in its border with the war-torn country.
