A 15-year-old Palestinian has been killed by Israeli shooting in the occupied West Bank as Israeli forces carried him to a refugee camp near Nablus.

The Palestinian health ministry said the 15-year-old, Imad Khaled Saleh Hashash, died on Tuesday after receiving a gunshot wound to the head in the Balata refugee camp.

The Israeli army said it conducted an overnight operation in the camp to apprehend “a suspect.”

Hamas, the group ruling the Gaza Strip, issued a statement to mourn the death of Hashash, Palestinian media reported. Hamas also commended Palestinians at the Balata refugee camp for standing up to Israeli forces during the raid.

Deadly violence against Palestinians is common in the West Bank, a Palestinian territory Israel has occupied since 1967.

Tensions in the region have been higher than ever in the past months as the eviction of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood by Israeli courts, followed by protests at the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex have heightened Palestinian-Israeli clashes.
