On Monday, the Iranian semi-official news agency Tasnim reported that an “Israeli spy” and several other people who have been working for foreign intelligence services were arrested in East Azerbaijan Province. The same report was given by the Iranian state news agency without mentioning the detainees’ nationalities.

Speaking to the news outlets, an official from the Iranian Intelligence Ministry said that “An Israeli spy has been arrested in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province… also other spies who were in contact with several countries’ intelligence services have been arrested as well.”

Any comments have not been made yet by the Israeli officials.

Iran does not recognize Israel and has accused it of being behind the assassination of a nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh who was accepted as the most important figure of the Iranian nuclear program.

In 2020, Iran executed a citizen who was blamed for spying on behalf of the US and Israeli intelligence services.
