According to the military, eight militants from the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group were captured by Iraqi army forces on Wednesday.

Iraqi military spokesperson Yehia Rasool said two militants were arrested in the capital Baghdad and four others in raids in the provinces of Anbar, Salahuddin, Kirkuk, and Diyala, according to a statement.

He further added that two more militants were nabbed in the northern province of Sulaymaniyah in an operation coordinated with Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

Especially in the provinces of Salahuddin, Diyala, and Kirkuk, attacks blamed on the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group have escalated in Iraq in recent months.

After reclaiming all of its territories invaded by the terror group in 2014, which equals to about a third of the country’s area, Iraq declared victory over Daesh/ISIS in 2017.

However, the terrorist group still maintains sleeper cells in large areas of Iraq and periodically launches attacks. Operations are frequently carried out by the Iraqi army against the group in parts of the country.
