Iran riot police clash with students protesting a young woman’s death

Iranian security forces battled with students at a prestigious university in Tehran on Sunday, according to social and state media, in the latest indication of a fatal crackdown on countrywide protests sparked by the death of a young lady in jail.

The anti-government demonstrations, which began on September 17 in the Kurdish village of Saqez at the funeral of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, have spiraled into the largest display of resistance to Iran’s authorities in years, with many demanding the end of more than four decades of Islamic cleric rule.

Activist Twitter account 1500 photos , with over 160,000 followers, tweeted multiple videos of hundreds of riot police surrounding Sharif University, a longtime center of protest.

One of the films depicted security officers using tear gas to push students off campus, with what looked to be distant gunfire audible in the background.

Another video shows security officers pursuing scores of students stranded in the subterranean parking garage of the institution. According to the report, scores of students have been arrested.
