On late Wednesday, local media reported that one of Haftar’s commanders, Mahmoud Al-Werfalli, was killed in an assassination carried out by unidentified gunmen in the city of Benghazi, located in eastern Libya. The incident was confirmed by Haftar’s spokesperson for the special forces through a tweet.

Mahmoud Al-Werfalli is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC). It has been asserted that Al-Werfalli committed or ordered a series of murders carried out in Benghazi and its vicinity. Another accusation directed against Al-Werfalli is that he had carried mass executions against unarmed detainees in Benghazi.

Due to accusations of violating human rights, Al-Werfalli was put on sanction lists by the US Treasury Department in December 2019.
