EU Special Envoy arrives in Sudan for talks

The visit came as the tension between Sudan and Ethiopia over a border dispute accelerated.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, appointed the Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto as the EU Special Envoy to get to Sudan and Ethiopia.

The EU Special Envoy Haavisto left for Sudan on early Sunday to discuss possible means to reduce tension with Ethiopia, the EU mission in Sudan stated. During the visit, ways in which the international community could provide support for reaching a peaceful resolution to the outgoing crisis will also be discussed, the statement added.

It is expected that the visit of the Finnish Minister will last for two days and he will come together with Sudanese officials, including Abdelfattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, and Foreign Minister Omar Qamar al-Din.

Recently, the clashes between the Sudanese and Ethiopian military have intensified.
