On Friday, a senior European Union official stated that a US-Iranian deal to revive Iran’s 2015 nuclear agreement was close but dependant on the political will of those involved.

The EU official said, “I expect an agreement in the coming week, the coming two weeks or so… I think we have texts on the table that are very, very close to what is going to be the final agreement.”

Envoys from Iran, Russia, China, Britain, France, Germany, the European Union and the United States were reported on February 17 to be negotiating the details of a possible deal.

The official concerned expressed that most of the issues are already agreed. But, as a principle in these kinds of negotiations, nothing is agreed until everything is agreed. The official added: “So we still have…some questions, some of them rather political and difficult to agree.”

As Iran’s sensitive uranium enrichment program was moving ahead quickly, the official said a deal was necessary, though Iran has always denied it is seeking nuclear weapons.

In this regard, the official stated that, on the ground, they are advancing very much at a speed that is not compatible with the long-term survival of the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
