An official statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced that the country will be taking the chairmanship of the UN Peacebuilding Commission’s 15th session for the first time, succeeding Canada.

Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Mohamed Edrees, hailed the development as a success of Egyptian diplomacy, while also underlining Cairo’s aim to prioritize the engagement of all actors in supporting UN peacebuilding objectives. Edrees added that this showed the UN and Africa’s confidence in Egypt’s capabilities to augment the role of the commission.
