Iraqi state-affiliated Security Media Network announced on Sunday that an attempted rocket attack targeted the fortified Green Zone in the Iraqi capital.

The heavily fortified diplomatic area is home to governmental buildings, diplomatic missions, and the prime minister’s residence.

At least two missiles were used in the attack according to the Security Media Network. The missiles were shot down by US-installed air defenses near the American Embassy.

Security sources did not mention any casualties or property damage. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Most attacks targeting the Green Zone are claimed by armed militia groups on militia-affiliated social media channels.

A de facto ceasefire was in place between Iran-backed armed groups and US forces since late summer after the Biden administration announced the end of US combat presence in Iraq.

The US combat forces are due to exit Iraq by the end of the year. The remaining forces will be recategorized as advisory.
