On Monday, a United Nations delegation led by Humanitarian Coordinator Lynn Hastings arrived in the Gaza Strip. Their arrival came just a few hours after the Islamic Jihad organization and Israel began to observe a ceasefire mediated by Egypt.

According to information provided to news agencies by a local security source, the team will meet with Palestinian authorities during their two-day visit to the strip.

It is not yet known if Hastings will meet with members of the Islamic Jihad group or the Hamas movement, which is now in control of the Gaza Strip.

The three days of Israeli airstrikes and Gazan rocket fire in retaliation have ended with the implementation of the ceasefire, which took effect late on Sunday night.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the Israeli offensive has resulted in the deaths of at least 43 Palestinians and the injuries of more than 300 others.
