After handing in its own final proposals, Iran has said any potential breakthrough in the Vienna talks aimed at restoring the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), rests on political decisions by Western nations.
In a news conference with his Irish counterpart Simon Coveney in Tehran on Monday, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated, “It’s better for Iran if there’s an agreement in Vienna and sanctions are lifted today rather than tomorrow.”
He further expressed, “So we are in a hurry for a good agreement, but it must be within the framework of logical talks and to achieve the rights of the Iranian nation.”
Amir-Abdollahian also called on the United States and the European signatories of the JCPOA to “stop playing with text and time” of an agreement and display their political will.
Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said in a tweet earlier on Monday that the talks in Vienna have reached a stage where an outcome could be announced, depending on the position of the US.
As Western parties maintain very limited time is left to save the JCPOA, the eighth round of the talks is expected to yield results in the next few weeks.
