In a parliamentary session held on February 10 by the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR), Fathi Bashagha, the former Minister of Interior, was elected as the prime minister for the transitional period.
Following the election, the United Nations (UN) announced that it would continue to recognize the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, as the country’s prime minister. The statement came from UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
Dujarric stated that the UN Advisor to Libya, Stephanie Williams, is continuing negotiations with the parties in Libya and has been informed about the latest developments.
In addition, PM Dbeibeh announced that he will continue his duties during the parliamentary elections.
According to the roadmap determined within the scope of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), the term of office of the GNU expires in June 2022.
In this context, Dbeibeh had stated in his previous statements that he would transfer his duties and powers only to an authority elected by the Libyan people.
