The Troika and the European Union urged Sudan’s coup leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to pick a new prime minister in accordance with the Constitutional Declaration, which grants the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) the right to nominate him.
Following Abdalla Hamdok’s resignation, the Troika and the European Union encouraged Sudanese army Commander-in-Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to appoint a prime minister after consulting with his transition partners.
They emphasized that continuing to control the country alone would weaken the transitional government’s credibility and plunge the country into violence. In response to this appeal, al-Burhan declined the call of Sudan’s leading advocates of economic reforms through his military spokesperson.
According to the official Sudan News Agency, Brig. Gen. Al-Tahir Abu Haja, Media Advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces stated, “We welcome the suggestions of friends, but the most important thing is a solution that stems from the national will,”
Also, Abu Haja stressed that the current vacuum must be filled in the shortest possible time. The army and security forces, according to the military official, are capable of safeguarding the transition until a democratic civil state is established in Sudan.
Al-Burhan has already rejected African Union mediation to resolve Sudan’s protracted issue, stating that he prefers local initiatives.
Also, the military leader accused the FFC troops of pursuing partisan goals while ignoring the transition’s reforms.
Elsewhere, the UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the Secretary-General continues to urge all Sudanese stakeholders to find common ground towards a path that meets the legitimate democratic aspirations of all Sudanese people.
He further stated that UNITAMS Director Volker Perthes continues to meet with Sudanese stakeholders in Khartoum to discuss the issue in order to bridge the divide between political and military authorities.
