Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani began a three-day state visit to Algeria, at the invitation of his Algerian counterpart.
Ghazouani arrived in Algiers on Monday afternoon, where he was greeted at Houari Boumediene International Airport by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and other high-level Algerian authorities.
The Mauritanian President first visited the Shrine of the Martyrs in Algiers, in memory of those that died during the Algerian War of Independence.
Accompanied by the Minister of Energy, Mohamed Arkab, the Mauritanian President laid a wreath of flowers in front of the commemorative stele where he observed a minute of silence.
Algeria and Mauritania have shown, in recent weeks, their willingness to intensify their bilateral relations, particularly on the commercial level.
On November 9, the Algerian Minister of the Interior, Kamel Beldjoud, announced, at the end of the first session of the Algerian-Mauritanian bilateral border committee, the creation of a free trade zone in the border region between the two countries.
According to him, Algerian and Mauritanian experts recommended: “to examine the opportunities for cooperation and partnership in the fields of prospecting, exploration, and production of hydrocarbons through the exploitation of available investment potential, and to reactivate the convention on fishing through the use of the authorizations granted on this subject in Mauritanian territorial waters.”
In addition to the creation of this zone, the minister also announced the relaunch of the project to build a road connecting Tindouf and Zouerate.
He specified: “From an economic and commercial standpoint, experts agreed on the importance of building a road linking Tindouf and Zouerate, by mobilizing financial resources for this purpose with the possibility of updating the study carried out.”
