According to state television, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune returned to Algiers following a one-month stay in Germany after entering a surgery, due to post-COVID-19 complications in his foot. Tebboune was hospitalised in Germany last year after being tested positive for COVID-19 and experiencing symptoms. On January 10, the Algerian president returned to Germany for a foot surgery caused by the complications of COVID-19. The surgery was conducted on 20 January, and was declared a success by the Algerian Presidency.
The return of President Tebboune has created expectations on long-awaited economic and political reforms which were promised after Tebboune succeeded former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned after pressure from the Hirak movement.
