Next Astana summit on Syria to be hosted by Iran early next year

On Wednesday, plans were unveiled indicating that the next round of the Astana summit on the Syrian crisis will be hosted by Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry expressed in a statement that the summit will take place in the capital Tehran early next year in the capital Tehran, without providing an exact date for the talks to take place.

The foreign ministers of the guarantor countries: Turkey, Russia, and Iran, will attend the summit to discuss ways of solving the Syrian crisis, according to the statement released by Iran’s foreign ministry.

Since early 2011, Syria has been ravaged by a civil war that emerged when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protesters with unexpected ferocity.

In January 2017, at the initiative of Turkey, Russia, and Iran, the Astana format peace process was launched in Kazakhstan to find a solution to the conflict.

A UN-led diplomatic process in Geneva has also been contributed to by the numerous meetings conducted by the Astana guarantors.
