Qasim al-Araji, the Iraqi National Security Advisor, announced on Twitter on Thursday the end of the US-led coalition’s combat mission in Iraq.
“Today we ended the last round of dialogue with the international coalition, which we started last year, to officially announce the end of the combat missions of the coalition forces and their withdrawal from Iraq,” Mr al-Araji’s tweet read.
He hinted that the US presence will continue in the form of training, advice and capacity building.
It is unclear how many US troops will remain in Iraq at the conclusion of the combat mission.
Officials affiliated with the Coalition previously made clear that there were no combat troops in Iraq.
The announcement comes after American and Iraqi governments agreed on July 26th to withdraw US combat forces by the end of the year as part of the fourth round of strategic dialogue.
US forces were deployed in Iraq since 2014 as part of the fight against ISIS. The terror group had captured a third of Iraqi territory at its peak. Iraqi armed forces, along with the US-led coalition territorially defeated ISIS in 2017.
