On Sunday, the Jordanian energy minister said that Lebanon has formally sought authorization from Jordan to allow the transit of Qatari gas via Jordanian territory.
Jordan Energy Minister Saleh al-Kharabsheh told a local radio station that “Jordan has granted its first permission to the proposal.” In addition, the minister stated that Amman would look at the amount of gas that will need to be transferred.
“Jordan is prepared to evaluate any proposal to carry gas supplies to Lebanon in the event that Beirut comes to an agreement with any gas-supplying country,” Saleh al-Kharabsheh further added.
Lebanon is experiencing a serious shortage of electricity supply due to a scarcity of fuel for power production. Additionally, the depreciation of the local currency and a scarcity of foreign cash for imports has resulted in a dramatic spike in the costs of derivatives.
Last Tuesday, in order to explore strategies to obtain natural gas for the country’s power generation facilities, Lebanese Energy Minister Walid Fayad and his Qatari colleague, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, held a meeting in Doha.
The meeting came as the energy and oil ministers of Jordan, Egypt, the Assad regime, and Lebanon reached an agreement in September on a road plan for supplying the nation with Egyptian power and natural gas in order to help Lebanon overcome its energy problem.
