The permanent military court in Misrata sentenced warlord Khalifa Haftar, the leader of the armed forces in the east and a candidate for the December 24 presidential election to death, at his hearing on Thursday.
The court cited the attacks on the Misrata Air Defense College in 2019 as the reason for its decision.
According to the court, a Libyan soldier died as a result of aerial bombardments by a military plane under the command of Haftar.
The court also announced that along with Haftar, generals close to Haftar such as Abdelrazik Al-Nathori, Saqr Al-Jeroushi and Abdelsalam Al-Hassi were sentenced to death. In addition to this, Deputy Attorney General Mohammed Gharouda made an official call for Haftar’s arrest due to his five ongoing hearings in 2019 and 2020 on different issues.
Haftar, the leader of the militia forces, put his candidacy in the presidential elections on December 24 last week, and his candidacy decision was protested in different parts of the country. Haftar’s candidacy was accepted by the Libyan High National Election Commission (HNEC).
Gharouda stated that Haftar wanted to postpone the proceedings against him, using the election process as an excuse.
