The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has paid an official visit to Iran to discuss the latest development, prior to the resumption of negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.
Arriving in Tehran on late Monday, Grossi held talks with the chief of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, on Tuesday. Following the meeting, the two nuclear chiefs held a joint conference.
In the conference, Grossi said, “The agency is seeking to continue and deepen the dialogue with the government of Iran… We agreed to continue our joint work on transparency and this will continue.”
For his part, Iran’s nuclear chief, Eslami, stated that some questions originated from documents fabricated by their “enemies” directed him, adding, “These questions have now been answered.”
Eslami also reiterated his country’s determination to resolve technical issues with the IAEA without politicizing the issue.
Within the scope of his visit, Grossi will come together with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
Clarifying uranium tracks found at Iranian unspecified nuclear sites and allowing the IAEA to reinstate monitoring cameras are two main issues that the agency requested Iran to take action.
Iran and P4+1 countries agreed to resume nuclear talks, which have been stalled since June, on November 29 in Vienna.
Grossi said in his news conference held on November 12 that his visit would provide an opportunity to hold a “serious conversation” with the new Iranian administration under hardline President Ebrahim Raisi.
His visit also came only a day before the quarterly meeting of the IAEA’s 35-nation Board of Governors.
