Military Prosecutor Massoud Arhouma sent a letter to the Libyan High National Election Commission (HNEC), calling for the suspension of the candidacy of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and Khalifa Haftar until they are cleared of the charges against them.
On the other hand, on November 14, when Saif al-Islam Gaddafi announced his candidacy, Deputy Attorney General Mohamed Gharouda demanded that the candidacies of Gaddafi and Haftar be declared invalid and suspended until the investigations are completed.
Son of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam is on trial by both the International Criminal Court (ICM) and the Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office for using mercenaries and committing war crimes in the past.
Incidents such as the murder of 26 students at the Military College in Tripoli, airstrikes on the shelter in Tajoura, and violence against protesters of the February revolution are among Gaddafi’s ongoing trials.
Libya is preparing for elections on December 24. After the announcement that many candidates from different regions would enter the election race with the controversial election law, eyes were turned to HNEC as of Monday, November 22.
