Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune stated that the Arab League Summit, which could not be held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be hosted in Algeria in March 2022.
Speaking at a meeting of the country’s diplomatic mission chiefs at the Conference Palace in the capital, Algiers, Tebboune made statements regarding the Arab League Summit. “Algeria will host the Arab League Summit next March,” Tebboune said.
Tebboune listed that the top issues to be discussed at the summit will be the repetition of the common Arab commitment to the Palestine issue and the reaffirmation of all countries’ commitment to the Arab Peace Initiative.
As for the second dossier in the summit, according to the Algerian president, he is reforming the working system of the League of Arab States to face current challenges,” without giving further details about the nature of these reforms.
Algeria’s demand to reform the Arab League dates back a few years. Earlier, at the 2005 summit he hosted, Tebboune called for fundamental reform of the Union’s work, including rotation of the position of Secretary-General among member states, rather than the exclusively Egyptian control over the position.
The founding charter of the League of Arab States was signed in Cairo in March 1945 in the presence of representatives of seven countries: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and Yemen.
