Azerbaijan and Qatar sign an agreement granting reciprocal visa exemptions to persons with regular passports, boosting tourism between the two countries.
The deal was revealed during a news conference between Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in Baku.
“Azerbaijan and Qatar have agreed on the necessity of unifying joint efforts, converging viewpoints, strengthening mechanisms for regional dialogue and stabilizing its bases, in order to achieve security, stability and prosperity in the region,” read a statement by the Gulf state’s foreign ministry, following meetings between Bayramov and Al-Thani.
Al-Thani stated during his visit that his country is looking forward to expanding bilateral relations with Azerbaijan, “especially in the economic and investment fields.” He also met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Following the third meeting of the Azerbaijan-Qatar joint intergovernmental trade, economic, and technical committee, the two countries issued a declaration aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation in a number of fields.
“Qatar’s foreign minister said that the committee’s third meeting is an embodiment of the political will of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and HE President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev with regards to enhancing cooperation in different fields, particularly in commerce and investment,” said Doha’s foreign ministry.
The two countries also discussed “promising” infrastructure and investment opportunities in renewable energy. Azerbaijani businesspeople should “get to know” Qatar’s economic environment, according to Qatar’s foreign minister.
Sheikh Tamim’s March 2016 visit to Baku was hailed as “the dawn of a new era in bilateral ties between two nations,” with Qatar and Azerbaijan agreeing to create a joint economic, commercial, and technical committee.
In February 2017, President Aliyev paid a visit to Doha, where the two nations signed a memorandum of understanding on mutual cultural cooperation.
