Ministers of the Jordanian government have submitted their resignation ahead of a government reshuffle, according to state-owned channels on Sunday.
Official sources have stated that the reshuffle would be the fourth since Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh became assumed his post in October 2020.
Al-Khasawneh, a veteran former diplomat and palace aide, was appointed by Jordanian King Abdullah II to restore public trust over the handling of the health crisis caused by COVID-19 and defuse anger over the failure of successive governments to deliver on pledges of prosperity and curbing corruption.
The government of al-Khasawneh has won the praise of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its handling of the economy during the pandemic and had negotiated a four-year IMF program worth $1.3 billion, signaling confidence in Jordan’s reform agenda.
Jordan’s economy posted its deepest contraction in decades last year, hit by lockdowns, border closures and a sharp fall in tourism as a result of the pandemic, but the government and the IMF both predict a rebound this year of around 2 percent.
