The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced today it anticipates the upcoming October 10 elections in Iraq to be free and transparent.
The Special Representative of UNAMI, Jeanine Plasschaert, held a press conference in Baghdad where she briefed journalists on the UN’s efforts to ensure the safety of the elections. “All our efforts are to ensure that there are no doubts in the elections,” she said.
Referring to fraud and irregularities recorded during the 2018 general elections, Plasschaert stated “The same things that were done in 2018 will not be repeated. It is important that these elections are different from the 2018 polls.”
According to Plasschaert, at least 877 international and local observers will be active during the elections.
She cautioned voters that elections will not bring miracles or initiate radical change while also calling for mass participation to ensure a representative government will emerge. “Participation will help establish a government that can make concrete positive changes” she continued.
