Sudan has accepted Turkey’s offer of mediation in its border conflicts with Ethiopia, according to a government official. Al-Burhan paid a visit to Turkey in August and signed several economic agreements with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Mariam al-Mahdi told in a news conference in Khartoum that during Sudanese Sovereignty Council chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s visit to Turkey last month, he accepted an initiative from the Turkish leadership to resolve the boundary conflicts with Ethiopia. She went on to say that the North African country is eager to strengthen connections with Turkey in a variety of areas, including politics and economics. In addition, al-Mahdi emphasized that it is necessary to admit that there has been tension in relations between Ethiopia and Sudan in line with the Hedasi Dam and the border crisis.
She also said that Sudan asked the UN Security Council to drop international sanctions regarding the situation in the western Darfur region. “The situation in Sudan, particularly in Darfur, has changed since the Sudanese revolution, the formation of the transitional government, and the signing of the peace deal in the region, so Sudan is in need of support of the international community regarding the implementation of the Juba peace agreement instead of the continuation of sanctions imposed because of the policies and practices of the old regime,” al-Mahdi expressed.
Sudan has also agreed to open offices for the UN Human Rights Council and the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to al-Mahdi.
The border issue between Sudan and Ethiopia, which escalated after the Tigray crisis, is also alleviated by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam dispute between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt, which has not been resolved for approximately 10 years.
