Khalid al-Mishri has made statements on the election law at the session of the Libyan Higher State Council on Sunday. Al-Mishri stated that the House of Representatives (HoR) in Tobruk should consult with them in determining the electoral law according to the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) signed in 2015.
Underlining that the constitutional ground to be established before the elections should emerge as a result of a compromise between the two institutions, al-Mishri invited the HoR to act with this awareness.
Al-Mishri also emphasized that if the HoR insists on acting alone, they will have to resort to new ways. Vice President of the Council Omar Bushah, on the other hand, expressed that it is dangerous to create the election law with a unilateral approach regarding the upcoming political process and emphasized that the way out is mutual reconciliation for Libya to eliminate stability and military alternatives.
The HoR, headed by Aguila Saleh, insisted on establishing the electoral law for different reasons. Aguila Saleh, had announced that he postponed the previous session because the members of the Government of National Unity (GNU) were “late for the talks.” Finally, Saleh announced that the election law was adopted on September 9 and sent the draft law to the Libyan High Election Committee (HNEC) and UNSMIL.
